Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities are often confronted with unusual situations when they study abroad.  While some cultures may view disabilities differently or provide disability access in an alternative way, many students with disabilities have productive and satisfying international experiences.  It is important to communicate your needs and to consider alternative ways to meet them.

Some points to consider:

  • Plan ahead. Discuss your study abroad plans with Student Disability Services, and disclose your disability needs early to the Study Abroad Office, so appropriate accommodations can be made in advance. Email studyabroad@mail.sdsu.edu or call (619) 594-2475.
  • Focus on programs that best fit your interests, academic goals, and professional aspirations. Your experiences abroad will help you to grow and provide exciting new perspectives.
  • Do your research. Before you go, find out as much as you can about your host culture and how they view disabilities. Read, talk to other students, and attend pre-departure orientation. Learn about what types of accommodation are typically provided in your host country, and be flexible and open to different ways of accommodating your disability. The more you know, the better prepared you’ll be to adapt to your new environment.
  • Consider how you will answer questions about your disability in the language of your host country. Prepare by looking up key vocabulary words and practicing dialogue ahead of time.
